In Newar Swanti, the ceremony meaning “worship of the self” is Mha Puja.

Mha Puja is a Newar ritual performed during Swanti, Nepal’s five-day Newar form of Tihar or Diwali. Its purpose is to purify and empower the individual, while also invoking prosperity, longevity, and an auspicious beginning to the New Year of Nepal Sambat.

A central feature is the worship of a mandala prepared for each participant. The mandala represents the self and the wider universe, and participants receive ritual items such as a long-burning wick, sacred thread, fruits, yogurt, and Sagan foods including rice wine, boiled egg, and smoked fish.
