In Monsters, Inc., the big blue monster Sullivan’s first name is James. His full name is James Patrick Sullivan, and he is usually called “Sulley” by his friends and coworkers.
Sulley is one of the film’s two central characters, alongside his one-eyed roommate and best friend, Mike Wazowski. He works as a professional scarer at Monsters, Incorporated, where human children’s screams are collected as an energy source. At the beginning of the film, Sulley is the company’s leading scarer and is competing to break the all-time scare record.
The name “Sulley” can make James easy to miss, especially because the character is almost never addressed by his first name in ordinary dialogue. Monsters University explores his earlier life and shows that he comes from a family associated with professional scaring. Despite his intimidating size and reputation, Sulley becomes protective of Boo and helps expose the company’s dangerous scream-extraction scheme.
