In Mission: Impossible (1996), Ving Rhames plays computer hacker Luther Stickell.
Luther Stickell is introduced as a skilled computer specialist who becomes an important ally to Ethan Hunt. After the opening mission goes wrong, Hunt recruits Luther to help uncover the real traitor and expose the conspiracy surrounding the Impossible Missions Force.
Ving Rhames returned as Luther in later Mission: Impossible films, making the character one of the franchise’s longest-running supporting figures. His role combines technical expertise with field operations, although the series increasingly presents Luther as a trusted team member rather than merely a computer hacker.
The first film was directed by Brian De Palma and stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. It is based on the television series Mission: Impossible, but the film introduced a new continuity and a more elaborate spy-thriller structure. Luther’s surname is Stickell, not “Stickler,” a common spelling mistake.
