In McDonald’s branding history, which slogan became the company’s advertising line in 1971?

The story behind the answer

“You Deserve a Break Today” became McDonald’s advertising slogan in 1971.

The line presented McDonald’s as a convenient and emotionally rewarding pause in a busy day. It was developed for a national advertising campaign and became one of the most recognizable slogans in American fast-food advertising.

The wording also fit McDonald’s expanding family and convenience positioning. Rather than naming a menu item, it sold the experience of taking a break at the restaurant, making the phrase adaptable to television, radio, and print advertising.

It is sometimes confused with “I’m Lovin’ It,” the much later slogan introduced in 2003. “Have It Your Way” belongs to Burger King, not McDonald’s, while “You Can’t Beat the Feeling” was another McDonald’s line from a different period.
