Ronald McDonald was introduced in 1963 as McDonald’s primary clown mascot.
The character was created for television advertising aimed at children and quickly became one of the most recognizable figures in fast-food branding. Early portrayals used a costume assembled from McDonald’s packaging, including a cup-like hat and a tray-like accessory. Actor Willard Scott was the first person to portray Ronald McDonald in a television commercial.
Ronald later became the central figure in McDonaldland, a fictional setting populated by characters such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese. Although some of those characters appeared in different periods and markets, Ronald remained the brand’s principal mascot.
The character’s role changed over time as McDonald’s advertising shifted toward broader family branding and food-focused campaigns. Ronald McDonald is often confused with the Hamburglar because both were heavily featured in McDonaldland advertising, but their identities and roles were different.
