Mayor McCheese was presented as the mayor of McDonaldland in McDonald’s advertising.
The character had a large cheeseburger for a head and wore a mayoral sash, combining a civic role with one of the chain’s best-known foods. He appeared in the McDonaldland campaign alongside Ronald McDonald and other fictional residents.
Mayor McCheese helped McDonald’s turn menu branding into a recognizable story world. His title made him easy to identify in commercials, while his cheeseburger design tied the character directly to the restaurant’s products.
He is sometimes mixed up with Officer Big Mac, a separate McDonaldland character whose design was based on the Big Mac. McDonaldland characters were promotional creations, not official figures in any real municipal government.
