McDonald’s used Speedee as its original self-service-system mascot in 1948.
Speedee was a chef-like character created for the McDonald brothers’ streamlined restaurant concept. The name reflected the business’s emphasis on rapid preparation and service, which was a major change from the carhop model common in American drive-ins.
The Speedee figure appeared in early McDonald’s signs and promotional material before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known character. This history is sometimes confused because later advertising made Ronald the face of the brand, while Speedee belonged to the earlier period when McDonald’s was emphasizing speed and operational efficiency.
The 1948 shift also introduced the “Speedee Service System,” a production method that helped establish the fast-food format. Its influence extended beyond McDonald’s, since standardized menus, kitchen stations, and quick assembly became defining features of the wider industry.
