McDonald’s introduced the Speedee mascot in 1948.
Speedee was a small chef character used to represent the McDonald brothers’ new speedy-service restaurant concept. The original McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California, had shifted toward a simplified menu and faster preparation, making speed a central part of its identity.
The name “Speedee” connected the mascot directly to the restaurant’s service promise. It appeared in early signage and promotional material before Ronald McDonald and the larger McDonaldland cast became important parts of the brand.
People sometimes confuse Speedee with later McDonald’s characters, especially Ronald McDonald. Speedee was the earlier mascot, while Ronald became the company’s best-known advertising figure during the 1960s. The Golden Arches also came later as the dominant visual symbol.
