McDonaldland was the fictional world created for McDonald’s character advertising.
McDonaldland appeared in McDonald’s commercials beginning in the early 1970s. It provided a shared setting for Ronald McDonald and other characters, including the Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and Birdie. The campaign gave the restaurant chain a storybook-style identity aimed especially at children.
Rather than promoting only a product or restaurant feature, the campaign presented McDonald’s as a playful universe with recurring personalities and locations. This helped distinguish the company’s advertising from straightforward food commercials and made the characters recognizable across television, packaging, and in-store promotions.
McDonaldland is often confused with “McWorld,” a later advertising term and campaign concept. McDonaldland was the named fictional setting associated with the character universe. Its imagery changed over time, and some characters were retired or redesigned, but the name remains a major part of McDonald’s branding history.
