McDonald’s branding history identifies Speedee as the early hamburger-service mascot introduced in 1948.
Speedee was a smiling chef character associated with the McDonald’s Speedee Service System, the restaurant’s original production method. The system emphasized fast, standardized preparation rather than the made-to-order carhop service common at many American drive-ins.
Speedee’s name reflected the brand’s central promise: speed. The character appeared in early McDonald’s signs and promotional material before the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald became the company’s most recognizable symbols. Many people remember the Hamburglar or Ronald McDonald first, but both came later. The Hamburglar was introduced in the early 1970s, while Ronald McDonald debuted in 1963.
