The moon-themed McDonald's advertising character introduced in the 1980s was called Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight was designed as a singing, piano-playing crescent moon character. His commercials used a revised version of “Mack the Knife,” creating a distinctive night-time identity for McDonald's restaurants and late-evening dining. The character's black sunglasses and crescent-shaped head made him visually different from Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland cast.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with a permanent mascot or with the name of a menu item. He was primarily an advertising character, and his national campaign was especially associated with the 1980s. The character was not the source of McDonald's later global “I'm Lovin' It” slogan.
The campaign shows how McDonald's branding could target a particular daypart, in this case evening customers, rather than only presenting the restaurant as a family lunch destination. Mac Tonight's memorable design also made him one of the chain's most recognizable short-lived advertising figures.
