Ronald McDonald was introduced in 1963 as McDonald’s first major television mascot.
The character was created for a Washington, D.C.-area advertising campaign and was originally played by television personality Willard Scott. Ronald’s design used familiar fast-food imagery: his costume included a yellow jumpsuit, red-and-white striped clothing, and a tray-like hat. The character’s clown appearance connected McDonald’s with children and helped establish a fantasy world around the restaurant brand.
Ronald McDonald is often confused with earlier McDonald’s characters, especially Speedee, who represented the company before Ronald’s arrival. Later characters such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese expanded the fictional McDonaldland setting, but Ronald remained its best-known central figure.
His role changed over time as McDonald’s advertising became less dependent on a large cast of fantasy characters. Even so, Ronald’s 1963 debut is an important branding milestone because it gave the company a recognizable human-like spokesperson designed specifically for television and children’s marketing.
