McDonald’s 1948 service-system mascot was Speedee.
Speedee represented the restaurant’s original emphasis on fast service. The mascot was drawn as a chef-like figure with a hamburger-shaped head and an “S” on his hat, reflecting the Speedee Service System introduced by Richard and Maurice McDonald.
Speedee predates Ronald McDonald and belonged to an earlier stage of the company’s identity. The McDonald brothers reorganized their San Bernardino restaurant around a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and rapid counter service in 1948.
A common mix-up is confusing Speedee with Speedy, the name of unrelated characters in popular culture. McDonald’s later shifted its consumer-facing branding toward Ronald McDonald and the Golden Arches, but Speedee remains an important link to the company’s early operational branding.
