In McDonald’s branding history, what mascot represented speed before Ronald McDonald?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s mascot before Ronald McDonald became the chain’s best-known character.

Speedee appeared in McDonald’s early branding after Richard and Maurice McDonald redesigned their restaurant around fast service in the late 1940s. The smiling chef character visually communicated the restaurant’s central promise: food prepared and served quickly.

The name connected directly with the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System, introduced in 1948. That system simplified the menu and organized kitchen work around efficiency. Speedee therefore functioned as both a character and a shorthand for the restaurant’s operating model.

Ronald McDonald gradually replaced Speedee in consumer-facing advertising during the 1960s. The older mascot is sometimes confused with later McDonaldland characters, but Speedee predates that entire cast and is especially associated with the company’s early postwar identity.
