The tradition has older roots than the modern street parties. Early 20th-century celebrations were associated with Royal Dublin Fusiliers stationed in Floriana. Those gatherings took place around Balzunetta, an area known for bars and its proximity to the soldiers’ barracks.

As Malta’s nightlife shifted toward St Julian’s, the celebration’s centre moved with it. Spinola Bay’s restaurants, pubs, open waterfront and pedestrian areas make it a natural gathering place, while Paceville adds clubs and late-night events. Thousands of people commonly attend, and the modern celebration is often more associated with music, green clothing and drinking than with formal religious observance.
