In "Mad Max: Fury Road," Immortan Joe is the warlord tyrant who rules the Citadel. Played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, Joe controls one of the wasteland’s most valuable resources: a large underground water supply that he distributes to dominate the population.
Joe rules through a cult-like hierarchy of War Boys, young followers who treat him as a divine figure and believe glorious death will earn them a place in Valhalla. His authority also rests on control of the Citadel’s water, the war machines, and neighboring resources such as Gastown and the Bullet Farm.
The Bullet Farmer is Joe’s ally, while Nux is one of his devoted War Boys. Rictus Erectus is Joe’s physically powerful son. Furiosa, once Joe’s trusted Imperator, eventually rebels after helping his enslaved wives escape, beginning the high-speed pursuit that drives the film.
