In Lost, the freighter crew member who could communicate with the dead was Miles Straume.
Miles joins the story as part of the team sent to the island aboard the Kahana. His unusual ability allows him to sense and communicate with the dead, although the series presents his talent through a mixture of supernatural events, personal trauma, and ambiguous evidence.
Miles’s gift is connected to his childhood and becomes especially important when he encounters the island’s past inhabitants. He is played by Ken Leung, whose performance combines Miles’s skepticism, anger, and sharp humor.
Miles is sometimes confused with Daniel Faraday because both arrive as members of the freighter team and both become involved in the show’s time-travel plot. Faraday is a physicist; Miles is the character associated with communication with the dead.
