In Lost in Space (1998), what designation identifies the robot that protects the Robinson family?

The story behind the answer

In Lost in Space (1998), the robot that protects the Robinson family is identified simply as Robot.

The machine is an advanced combat robot connected to the Robinson family’s mission to establish a human colony beyond Earth. After an attack and a journey through time, it becomes entangled with the family’s survival. Its design includes a humanoid upper body, mechanical limbs, and powerful weapon systems, but its behavior also develops beyond simple programming.

The film is based on the 1965 television series Lost in Space, which itself was inspired partly by the novel The Swiss Family Robinson. Stephen Hopkins directed the 1998 film, and Matt LeBlanc played Major Don West. Gary Oldman provided the voice of the robot, with the character credited in the film and reference sources as Robot rather than with a personal name.

This character is often confused with the television series’ Robot, commonly associated with the designation B-9. The 1998 film uses a new continuity and a more aggressive visual design, so B-9 is not the film’s canonical answer.
