The protagonist of Kiera Cass’s young-adult novel The Selection is America Singer.
America Singer is a talented musician from a lower caste in the fictional country of Illéa. She enters the Selection, a competition in which thirty-five young women are invited to compete for the chance to marry Prince Maxon Schreave. America initially does not want to participate, partly because of her relationship with Aspen Leger.
The novel was published in 2012 and begins a series that combines romance, royal competition, and dystopian social divisions. The title refers both to the competition and to the process by which the monarchy chooses a future queen.
America is sometimes confused with Aspen or Maxon because both are central to the romantic triangle. Aspen is America’s former boyfriend, while Maxon is the prince. America’s surname, Singer, also reflects her family’s musical background.
