In Jurassic Park (1993), the dinosaur theme park is built on Isla Nublar.
The island is a fictional location off Costa Rica in Michael Crichton’s novel and Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation. Billionaire John Hammond’s company, InGen, uses genetic engineering to recreate dinosaurs and plans to display them to paying visitors.
Isla Nublar is often confused with Isla Sorna, another fictional island in the Jurassic Park universe. Isla Sorna is the site of the separate dinosaur-rearing operation known as Site B, introduced in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Isla Nublar is where the first film’s park is located.
The film was released in 1993 and became a landmark in visual effects, combining computer-generated imagery with detailed animatronic dinosaurs. Its story begins when experts are invited to inspect the park before its planned opening.
