In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what object must Frodo destroy?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Frodo must destroy the One Ring.

Sauron forged the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom in the Second Age, placing much of his power into it. Because its power is tied to Sauron, the Ring can be destroyed only in the same volcanic fire where it was made. This makes Mount Doom, rather than a battlefield or royal court, the essential destination of the quest.

Bilbo Baggins first finds the Ring beneath the Misty Mountains and later gives it to Frodo. Frodo carries it from the Shire toward Mordor with help from Samwise Gamgee and the other members of the Fellowship.

The One Ring is often confused with other important Tolkien objects. Sting is Bilbo and Frodo’s sword, the palantíri are seeing-stones, and a Silmaril is one of the jewels central to The Silmarillion.
