In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, what number does the Fellowship have?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship has nine members.

The Fellowship of the Ring is formed at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell. Its mission is to carry the One Ring from Rivendell toward Mordor, where it can be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. The group includes four Hobbits, two Men, one Elf, one Dwarf, and the wizard Gandalf.

The nine-member company is deliberately presented as a counterpart to the nine Ringwraiths, or Nazgûl, servants of Sauron. The Fellowship does not remain together throughout the journey. Gandalf falls in Moria, Boromir dies after the group reaches Amon Hen, and the company eventually breaks apart as its members pursue different responsibilities. The title The Fellowship of the Ring refers both to the group and to the first volume of Tolkien’s published trilogy.
