In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Frodo’s loyal gardener and companion is Samwise Gamgee.
Samwise, commonly called Sam, begins the story as Frodo Baggins’s gardener at Bag End in Hobbiton. He becomes Frodo’s companion on the journey to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom. Sam’s loyalty, practical judgment, courage, and endurance make him one of the story’s central heroes.
Although Sam is initially reluctant to leave the Shire, Gandalf discovers him listening outside Frodo’s window and orders him to accompany Frodo. He later travels with the Fellowship, crosses dangerous landscapes, resists the influence of the Ring, and carries Frodo when the Ring-bearer can go no farther. Sam also briefly carries the Ring after Frodo is captured by Orcs.
Tolkien presents Sam as an ordinary person whose steadfastness becomes extraordinary. His relationship with Frodo is one of the defining friendships in the trilogy and is crucial to the quest’s success.
