In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship has nine members.
The Fellowship is formed at Rivendell to help Frodo Baggins carry the One Ring toward Mordor. Its nine members are Frodo, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. The group combines representatives of several peoples and different kinds of experience.
The number nine is deliberately linked to the Nazgûl, the nine Ringwraiths who serve Sauron. The Fellowship does not remain together for the entire journey: it breaks apart after the events at Amon Hen, and its members follow different paths. The title The Fellowship of the Ring is also used for the first volume of Tolkien's trilogy, published in 1954.
