In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo Baggins is 111 years old at his birthday party.
Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday in the Shire at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. The party also marks Frodo Baggins’s coming of age: Frodo is 33, the age at which Hobbits traditionally become adults. Bilbo’s unusually long life is one reason the event attracts so much attention.
During the celebration, Bilbo gives a farewell speech, uses the One Ring to disappear, and leaves Hobbiton. He passes the Ring to Frodo, although Gandalf later investigates it and learns that it is the One Ring forged by Sauron.
Readers sometimes confuse Bilbo’s age with Frodo’s age or with the time that passes before Frodo leaves the Shire. In the narrative, Bilbo’s party occurs in the year 3001 of the Third Age, while Frodo’s departure follows later after Gandalf’s investigation.
