In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, what is the name of the mountain where Smaug lives?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Smaug lives in the Lonely Mountain.

The Lonely Mountain is also called Erebor. It was the stronghold and kingdom of the Dwarves under the Grey Mountains’ royal line before Smaug attacked and seized its treasure.

In The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield leads a company of Dwarves to reclaim Erebor. Bilbo enters the mountain and speaks with Smaug, whose knowledge of the treasure’s hidden weakness eventually helps the defenders of Lake-town.

The Lonely Mountain should not be confused with Mount Doom, the volcanic peak in Mordor where the One Ring was destroyed. Erebor lies far to the northeast of the Shire and has a different role in Tolkien’s geography.
