In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, what was the original name of Gandalf the Grey?

The story behind the answer

Olórin was the original name of Gandalf the Grey in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.

Olórin was a Maia, a spiritual being who lived in Valinor before arriving in Middle-earth. He was sent as one of the Istari, or Wizards, to oppose Sauron and encourage the peoples of Middle-earth rather than rule them by force.

Gandalf used different names in different cultures and periods. The Elves often called him Mithrandir, meaning “Grey Pilgrim,” while the Dwarves knew him as Tharkûn. His appearance as Gandalf the Grey changed after his battle with the Balrog, when he returned as Gandalf the White.

Curunír was the original name of Saruman, and Aiwendil was associated with Radagast. These names belong to other members of the Istari, which makes them common alternatives in difficult questions about Tolkien’s Wizards.
