In J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings, what is the name of the forest where Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings, Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard in Fangorn Forest.

Fangorn is an ancient woodland east of the Misty Mountains and close to Isengard. It is inhabited by the Ents, tree-like shepherds who protect forests. Treebeard, whose Elvish name is Fangorn, is the oldest and most prominent Ent encountered by the hobbits.

After escaping from the Orcs who captured them, Merry and Pippin enter Fangorn and encounter Treebeard. Their account of Saruman’s destruction of the surrounding trees helps persuade the Ents to attack Isengard. The forest is sometimes confused with Mirkwood, another major Tolkien woodland, but Mirkwood lies much farther east and is not the setting of Treebeard’s meeting with the hobbits.
