In J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Fellowship of the Ring, what is the name of the inn where Frodo meets Aragorn?

The story behind the answer

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo meets Aragorn at an inn called The Prancing Pony.

The Prancing Pony stands in Bree, a settlement inhabited by both Hobbits and Men. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay there after leaving the Shire. Frodo uses the false name “Underhill,” but his attempt at discretion fails when he puts on the One Ring and disappears during a performance in the common room.

Aragorn is introduced there under the name Strider. At first the Hobbits regard him with suspicion, but he reveals that he is watching for them and understands the dangers of the road. He becomes their guide from Bree toward Rivendell, beginning his close association with the Ring-bearer.

The Green Dragon and The Ivy Bush are inns in or near the Shire, while the Golden Perch is an inn at Stock. These names belong to Tolkien’s wider geography, but none is the Bree inn where the company encounters Strider. The Prancing Pony is also a recurring location in later adaptations and games.
