In John Green’s young-adult novel Looking for Alaska, Miles Halter attends Culver Creek Academy.
Miles leaves his home in Florida to attend the boarding school in Alabama, hoping to seek a “Great Perhaps.” At Culver Creek, he forms friendships with Alaska Young, the Colonel, and Takumi, and experiences the intense social and emotional life that shapes the novel.
The book was published in 2005 and was John Green’s debut novel. Its two-part structure, marked by a before-and-after countdown, follows Miles’s changing understanding of friendship, responsibility, grief, and forgiveness.
Culver Creek Academy is fictional, although the setting draws on aspects of boarding-school life. It should not be confused with real American schools such as Phillips Exeter Academy. Welton Academy belongs to the film Dead Poets Society, not to Green’s novel.
