In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the international wizarding tournament is the Triwizard Tournament.
The competition brings together three students, one from each of three European wizarding schools: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. Although it is traditionally a contest among three champions, Harry Potter is unexpectedly selected as a fourth champion.
The tournament consists of three dangerous tasks involving a dragon, the lake beneath Hogwarts and a magically created maze. The story is set during the 1994–95 school year, and the final task leads to Lord Voldemort’s return.
Readers sometimes confuse the tournament with the Quidditch World Cup, which appears at the beginning of the novel but is a separate sporting event. The book was published in 2000 as the fourth Harry Potter novel.
