In Japan, the new academic year usually begins in April.
Most Japanese schools start their academic year in early April, making the spring cherry-blossom season closely associated with entrance ceremonies and the beginning of a new school stage. The school year then continues through the following March.
Japan’s academic calendar differs from the September-to-June pattern common in countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Japanese schools generally have a short spring break from late March to early April, followed by the opening of the new year.
The calendar also includes a summer break of about one month, a winter break around late December and early January, and other shorter breaks. Universities in Japan likewise generally begin their academic year in April, although their vacation schedules can differ from those of primary and secondary schools.
