In J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, the wizarding sport played on broomsticks is Quidditch.
Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players. Each team has three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper, and one Seeker. Chasers try to put the Quaffle through one of three opposing hoops, while Beaters use bats to redirect Bludgers. The Seeker pursues the Golden Snitch, whose capture usually ends the match and awards 150 points.
The sport is a major part of Hogwarts life, and Harry plays Seeker for Gryffindor. The four Hogwarts houses compete in a school tournament, making Quidditch one of the series’ most recognizable recurring elements. A common mix-up is treating the Snitch as the whole game: it is only one ball in the sport, alongside the Quaffle and two Bludgers. Rowling developed the fictional game for the Harry Potter world, where it has a much longer history than the school matches shown in the novels.
