Peter Warne is the newspaper reporter who travels with runaway heiress Ellie Andrews in It Happened One Night.
Clark Gable plays Peter, a recently dismissed journalist who recognizes Ellie and proposes a deal: he will help her reach New York in exchange for the exclusive story of her escape. Claudette Colbert plays Ellie.
The 1934 film was directed by Frank Capra and adapted from the short story “Night Bus” by Samuel Hopkins Adams. Its road-trip structure lets the relationship develop through arguments, practical problems, and gradually increasing trust.
Peter is sometimes confused with Walter Burns, the editor in His Girl Friday, another fast-talking newspaper comedy. It Happened One Night is also notable as the first film to win all five major Academy Awards.
