In Islamic tradition, the angel who brought Quran revelations to Muhammad was Gabriel.
Known in Arabic as Jibril, Gabriel is the angel associated with delivering God’s revelations to prophets. Islamic tradition identifies him as the messenger who conveyed the Quran to Muhammad over approximately 23 years, beginning with the first revelation in the Cave of Hira.
Ramadan is especially connected with this event because Islamic tradition says the Quran was revealed during the month. The Night of Power, or Laylat al-Qadr, commemorates the beginning of that revelation and is observed during Ramadan’s final ten nights.
Gabriel is also known in Jewish and Christian traditions, although descriptions of his role differ across religions. Michael, Israfil, and Azrael are other angels named in Islamic tradition, but they are not the angel identified with delivering the Quran.
