In Islam, which pilgrimage site is the plain where pilgrims perform the central standing rite of hajj?

The story behind the answer

In Islam, Arafat is the pilgrimage site where pilgrims perform the central standing rite of hajj. This rite, known as wuquf, takes place on the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Pilgrims travel from Mina to the plain of Arafat, where they spend the afternoon in prayer, remembrance, and supplication. After sunset, they leave for Muzdalifah. The standing at Arafat is widely regarded as the defining central component of hajj.

Arafat is distinct from Mina and Muzdalifah, which are also associated with the pilgrimage route. The hill commonly called Mount Arafat, or the Mount of Mercy, stands within the broader plain and should not be confused with the entire site.
