In Islam, Jibril is the angel who brings divine revelation to Muhammad.
Jibril—also called Gabriel in Christian and Jewish traditions—is regarded in Islam as the principal messenger between God and the prophets. Islamic tradition identifies him as the angel who delivered the Qur’an to Muhammad, beginning with the first revelation at the Cave of Hira near Mecca.
The Arabic name Jibril appears in the Qur’an, where he is associated with bringing revelation and supporting God’s messengers. He is also linked with the Night Journey and Ascension, when Muhammad is traditionally said to have travelled through the heavens.
A common mix-up is confusing Jibril with Israfil, who is traditionally associated with blowing the trumpet at the end of time; Azrael is associated with death, while Mikail is linked with natural forces and sustenance.
