Answer
Malam Takbiran
Answer
Malam Takbiran
In Indonesia, the night before Eid al-Fitr when people chant takbir is called Malam Takbiran.
Malam means “night,” and takbiran refers to the public or communal recitation of takbir—praising God with phrases including “Allahu akbar,” meaning “God is greatest.” The observance begins after sunset at the end of Ramadan, once the start of 1 Shawwal has been determined.
Malam Takbiran is a major part of Indonesia’s Lebaran atmosphere. Takbir may be heard from mosques and prayer halls, while some communities organize processions involving cars, motorcycles, drums or illuminated floats. In some areas, oil lamps and fireworks have also been part of the celebration, although authorities may restrict dangerous or disruptive practices.
The term should not be confused with Chaand Raat, a South Asian name for the Eid eve, or Lailatul Qadar, one of the holiest nights associated with Ramadan. Indonesian Muslims commonly call Eid al-Fitr Idul Fitri or Lebaran, and the following day includes prayer, family visits, forgiveness rituals and festive foods such as ketupat.
