The opening nightclub sequence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom takes place in Shanghai, China.
Indiana Jones meets the criminal boss Lao Che at Club Obi Wan, where a transaction involving the ashes of Nurhachi goes wrong. Indiana escapes with singer Willie Scott and the young boy who becomes known as Short Round. Their escape leads to the film’s airborne getaway and eventual arrival in India.
The sequence is set in 1935, before the main action in Raiders of the Lost Ark’s chronology. Club Obi Wan is a fictional nightclub, despite its name resembling the Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Shanghai is sometimes confused with the film’s later Indian locations. The palace at Pankot and the village of Mayapore belong to the India section of the story, not the opening nightclub scene.
