In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the village’s stolen sacred stones are the Sankara Stones.
The story begins in 1935, one year before Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones, singer Willie Scott, and the child Short Round reach an Indian village suffering after the theft of a sacred stone and the disappearance of its children.
The Sankara Stones are fictional objects inspired by religious and mythological ideas. In the film, five stones are connected with the god Shiva, and the Thuggee cult seeks to gather them as part of its plan for power. Jones recovers one stone and travels to Pankot Palace, where he discovers the wider conspiracy.
The film uses the stones as a clear quest object, but its depiction of India and Hindu religious themes has been criticized for stereotypes. The film was released in 1984 and served as a prequel to Raiders.
