In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the opening 1912 flashback involving a young Indiana Jones is set in Moab.
The sequence follows the teenage Indiana as he encounters a group of grave robbers stealing a coronado cross. He tries to recover the artifact and learns several habits and fears that later become recognizable parts of the adult character, including his use of a whip and his fear of snakes.
Moab is a city in southeastern Utah, near landscapes often associated with American Western films. The scene is not set in Cortez, Colorado, even though that city is another southwestern place with archaeological associations. River Phoenix played the young Indiana Jones in this sequence, while Harrison Ford played the adult character in the main 1938 storyline.
