In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sean Connery plays Indiana Jones’s father, Henry Jones, Sr.
Connery was already internationally famous for playing James Bond when he joined the Indiana Jones series. His casting gave Henry Jones, Sr. considerable screen presence and created a lively contrast with Harrison Ford’s more physical, improvisational hero.
The film presents Henry as an academic specialist in medieval history and the Holy Grail. Although he initially seems absorbed in research rather than family life, the adventure forces him and Indiana to cooperate while crossing Europe and the Middle East.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1989. River Phoenix plays the teenage Indiana in the opening sequence, but Connery plays the adult character’s father throughout the main adventure. Denholm Elliott returns as Marcus Brody, Indiana’s colleague and friend.
