Indiana Jones meets Elsa Schneider in Venice in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Venice is the first major European setting of the film’s present-day adventure. Indiana and Marcus Brody travel there while following clues connected to the Holy Grail and Indiana’s missing father, Henry Jones, Sr. Elsa Schneider, played by Alison Doody, is introduced as an Austrian art historian working with the Joneses.
The Venice sequence includes research in a library, a pursuit through catacombs beneath the city, and a dramatic escape by boat. It is often remembered as the film’s bridge between the academic mystery and the larger international chase. Venice is also distinct from Berlin, where Indiana later confronts the Nazi-controlled expedition and encounters Adolf Hitler during a book-burning rally.
