The main story of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is set in the 1950s. More specifically, the action begins in 1957, during the Cold War and the era of American fears about Soviet espionage and nuclear weapons.
This setting distinguishes the fourth film from the earlier Indiana Jones adventures, which take place before or during the Second World War. The opening sequence uses a convoy, a military storage facility, and a nuclear-test town to establish the period’s atmosphere before the plot turns toward South American archaeology.
The film’s Soviet antagonists replace the Nazi villains of the earlier entries. Its setting also allows references to 1950s youth culture, including the greaser style associated with Mutt Williams. Harrison Ford returned as Indiana Jones, while Shia LaBeouf played Mutt and Cate Blanchett played Soviet agent Irina Spalko.
