In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, what ancient mechanism does Indiana Jones seek?

The story behind the answer

In Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Indiana Jones seeks the Antikythera, an ancient mechanism also called the Dial of Destiny.

The device is based on the real Antikythera mechanism, a complex geared instrument recovered from a shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901. Scholars generally date the historical mechanism to the second or first century BCE and connect it with astronomical calculations.

The film expands that historical object into a fictional device capable of revealing temporal fissures. Indiana and his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, race to find it before Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi scientist who wants to use it to alter history.

The movie was released in 2023 and is set partly in 1969. Harrison Ford plays Indiana Jones, while Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Helena. The real mechanism does not have the time-travel powers shown in the film.
