In House M.D., Gregory House uses a cane to walk.
House’s cane is one of the character’s most recognizable visual features. He has chronic pain and impaired mobility after an infarction damaged muscle in his right thigh, a condition that also contributes to his dependence on the painkiller Vicodin.
The cane is not merely a prop: House frequently uses it while moving through the hospital, and the way he carries or decorates it becomes part of his distinctive appearance. In the early seasons, the cane often has a flame pattern, reinforcing the show’s interest in small recurring character details.
House’s limp and pain are central to his characterization, but the series sometimes changes how severe his mobility problems appear from episode to episode. His cane should not be confused with a crutch, which supports more weight through the arms and is not his usual walking aid.
