In Homer’s Odyssey, which goddess killed Ariadne on the island of Dia?

The story behind the answer

In Homer’s Odyssey, Artemis killed Ariadne on the island of Dia.

Odysseus hears the story among the accounts of famous figures connected with the gods. The passage says that Dionysus accused Ariadne of violating divine rules, after which Artemis killed her on Dia.

This version differs from the familiar later tradition in which Theseus abandons Ariadne on Naxos and Dionysus becomes her husband. Ancient myths often preserve several versions of the same character’s fate, and Homer’s account is notably brief.

Dia is sometimes identified with Naxos, although ancient geographical identifications are not always certain. The episode is separate from Ariadne’s role in helping Theseus escape the Labyrinth.
