Hope remained in Pandora’s jar after the evils escaped in Hesiod’s Works and Days. The text says that Hope stayed inside because Pandora replaced the lid before it could leave.
The Greek word is elpis, commonly translated as hope. The myth does not present a completely simple explanation of whether this remaining hope is a blessing or another element of Zeus’s plan. Some interpretations see hope as humanity’s consolation, while others note that it was kept enclosed rather than released.
A popular retelling says Pandora released all evils but kept hope for humankind. That wording captures the familiar moral, but the ancient text is more ambiguous about why Hope was in the jar and what its confinement means. “Hope” is also not an evil in the usual modern sense, which is why the ending has generated centuries of philosophical discussion.
