In Harry Potter and the the Goblet of Fire, which champion is chosen from Hogwarts first?

The story behind the answer

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Cedric Diggory is chosen as Hogwarts’s champion first.

The selection takes place during the Halloween feast in the Great Hall, when the Goblet of Fire announces the contestants for the Triwizard Tournament. Cedric’s name emerges before those of Viktor Krum, Fleur Delacour, and Harry Potter. Hogwarts therefore initially has one official champion: Cedric, a respected Hufflepuff student.

Harry’s later selection creates the film’s central conflict. Because the Goblet produces Harry’s name as a fourth champion, the adults argue over whether he entered himself or was entered by someone else. The film treats Harry’s selection as an extraordinary breach of the tournament’s expected rules.

A common mix-up is to identify Harry as Hogwarts’s first champion because he becomes the story’s focus. In the actual announcement order, however, Cedric is named before Harry. Cedric is portrayed by Robert Pattinson.
