In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, what position does Harry play on the Gryffindor Quidditch team?

The story behind the answer

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry plays Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

Harry discovers Quidditch during his first year at Hogwarts, when Oliver Wood explains the rules and positions. The Seeker has a special role: finding and catching the Golden Snitch, a tiny winged ball that usually ends the match and awards 150 points.

Harry’s flying ability makes Professor McGonagall recommend him for the team, even though first-year students normally do not receive team places. His first match is against Slytherin, where a jinx causes his broom to behave dangerously. The film reveals that Professor Quirrell, rather than Severus Snape, is responsible for the disturbance.

The other Quidditch positions are Keeper, Beater and Chaser. A common mix-up is assuming Harry is a Chaser because he scores points, but the films consistently identify him as Gryffindor’s Seeker. His position remains important throughout the series and becomes one of his most recognizable Hogwarts roles.
